Gray Water Filter

Real Time Solutions For Gray Water

The GrayWaterFilter (GWF) is designed for the commercial marine industry to treat your gray water and simply filter out and remove:
Soaps, shampoos, dish and laundry soaps, body oils, makeup, shaving cream, toothpaste, BOD’s, phosphates, and nitrates from gray water prior to overboard discharge.

The GrayWaterFilter module can be furnished by itself to incorporate into your existing system or as a modular system including 3 stage filtration system with pump and strainer. Prefiltration is required to get the most life from the GRAYWATERFILTER module.

Got Gray Water? Got Vessel General Permit?
The GWF module uses several different filter medias and the unique flow pattern to remove the gray water pollutants prior to discharge. The GrayWaterFilter was designed to meet the tough EU waste water treatment (91/271/EEC) and MARPOL Annex IV as the criteria for water acceptable to discharge. We don’t play by those rules here in the USA just YET!

Historically for gray water disposal we have used our BilgeVAP and MarineVAP electric powered evaporators on-board the vessels for ZERO LIQUID DISCHARGE. But even with the evaporators——the soaps cause a great deal of trouble with foaming and sudsing getting out of control.

Typically gray water consists of: soaps and shampoos, hair conditioners, lotions and gels, greases, oils and cosmetics, cleaning materials, hair and lint. If Gray water is collected and retained in a holding tank, it becomes foul smelling and contains bacteria, some of which are dangerous. Using gray water holding tanks takes space and adds weight resulting in greater power requirements and emissions.

So what’s in Gray Water?

A key requirement of successful gray water treatment is the ability to process the water in real time. With the GrayWaterFilter the need for on board holding tanks or costly pump outs is eliminated.
Here in the USA the commercial marine industry is losing their exemption to the Vessel General Permit (VGP) which is a set of regulations governing how several waste streams generated aboard vessels—-can be handled. Chief among these wastewater streams is gray water, since there are relatively huge volumes to deal with from showers, hand washing, dish and laundry soaps.

The commercial marine industry working on the Great Lakes has a more severe set of restrictions than do the boats working the moving waters on the inland rivers. Coastal operators also often have a different set of regulations depending on how the states or even the ports regulate gray water treatment or disposal.

The GWF module shown above can treat up to 5300 gallons of gray water

There are some areas in USA waters where the regulations call out for the gray water to be treated thru a USCG approved Type ll marine sanitation device. This would seriously hydraulically overload an MSD, so we are furnishing an extra small MSD to be used exclusively for gray water——mostly just SANITIZING THE WATER BEFORE OVERBOARD DISCHARGE. Some operators are storing their gray waters oboard for offshore discharge or even legal pumpoff or discharge to a 3rd party.
